How to Draw Sea Waves
Step 1
Let’s keep things nice and simple for this first step of our guide to drawing sea waves.
We’ll make these waves look amazing by adding lots of details and elements that make a whole, so we’ll take it slow!
We’ll draw two simple lines for this first step.
These lines are rounded and wavy at the ends, as shown in our reference image. Once you’ve replicated these lines, you’re ready for the next step.
Step 2
Now let’s add more lines to your drawing of the sea waves, but these will look a little different than what you drew in the previous one.
The first line is quite small and rounded, connecting to the top of the line you drew on the left in the previous step.
The second line we draw in this step will be slightly larger than the first.
This starts below all the other lines and curves up and down until it connects to the end of the line on the right.
Step 3
In this third step of our how to draw sea waves tutorial, you’ll add more lines to create the effect of waves.
The lines we’ll add from here may look more complex than what you’ve drawn, but if you follow the reference image closely, you should be fine.
We’re going to add two lines in this step, and the first one starts on the left side and moves inward with a slight curve.
The other connects to this one and has a slight curl to the left, and a larger one connects to one of the top lines at the top.
Step 4
Your drawing of sea waves looks cool! In the next steps, we will add more lines to the image to make it more vivid.
These lines we add in this fourth step are generally smaller and curled like the others.
Most of these lines go into the inner sections of the waves and connect to the others you’ve already drawn.
Step 5
It’s time to add a few more lines to this step of our how-to-draw sea waves guide.
Also, these lines go into the other lines and shapes we have been working on. We’re also going to start adding some small shapes popping out from the outside of the ocean wave outlines.
This first shape will be small, rippled, and peeked out from the top of the bottom ripple of the waves.
Step 6
We’ll be adding the final details and elements to your ocean wave design soon, but first, we’ll add a little more texture to the waves.
Also, these lines are curved and go into the waveform. The reference image shows you how to place them, and then it’s time for the finishing touches!
Step 7
Now we can add the final details and elements in this step of our guide on how to draw sea waves.
We added a lot of detailed lines inside the different outlines of the waves and then finally drew some big drops coming out from the tops of the waves.
You could even add some fun touches to top it off! Some ideas include drawing dolphins jumping out of the waves or a boat sailing on them.
Step 8
To finish this ocean wave design in style, we’re going to add some colors!
In our reference image, we used different shades of blue for the different areas of the water, and we also incorporated some white for the ocean foam.
We chose these colors, but feel free to use any other you like! Choosing colors is one thing, but you can also have fun with your artistic mediums.
We recommend watercolors for this, but whatever you use will look great!
